Faith First
Why Faith First?
With the elimination of confessional schools 2001, the Montreal Diocese (English section) has chosen Faith First as the catechetical program for faith education.
Faith First at St. Monica’s
At St. Monica’s, our Faith First program is designed for children who are in grades 1-6. It is a 24-week program, starting in mid-September, in a classroom environment. Classes are offered on Saturdays at 3 pm or Sundays 10 am. All classes are taught by volunteers (catechists and catechist helpers).
Who is eligible and how do I register?
Children currently in kindergarten and returning children must register before August 15th to guarantee a spot. Registration forms are available here or at the front entrance of the church, the rectory and on our website. Once completed, please return them to the rectory with your payment. The cost of our program is $80.00 for one child, $105.00 for two children and $125.00 for three +. Please note that no child will be refused based on your inability to pay.
Pre-grade 1 children are encouraged to join our “Little Gifts” program offered at our 11 am Mass on Sundays.
Preparation of the Sacraments
Our program incorporates the preparation of the sacraments of Eucharist, Reconciliation and Confirmation. The sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation are celebrated in grade 3. The sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated in grade 6. A two year minimum is required to receive any sacrament.
All children, who are making their First Communion or Confirmation, are required to attend a retreat.
What is required of the parents?
The religious awakening which takes place in the home is irreplaceable. Faith First gives parents an important opportunity to share your own faith with your children. Volunteering as a catechist or catechist helper is a good way to show your commitment to your faith. Attending Mass each week is also vital to their spiritual growth.
Parents are asked to attend a general information meeting at the beginning of the session to discuss the upcoming season. This meeting is scheduled when your child is attending class. Parents, whose children are preparing to make one of the sacraments, are required to attend additional scheduled meetings.
St. Monica's Faith First Coordinator is Jenny Parsons-Armstrong. If you would like more information about this program, please contact the parish office.
