Journey to Resurrection: The Art and Virtue of Alms-Giving

Guest - March 10, 2021

In this present time, poverty and homelessness are important issues not only for the global south but also for our country, even our own city. Therefore monetary almsgiving is much needed by so many organizations working to alleviate the sufferings of God’s people in all parts of this world.

This Lent, let us consider adding another dimension to the tradition of giving money.  Let us include in our Lenten observances the sharing of our God-given gifts, talents and our time in the service of our community.

Jesus devoted his life in the service of others according to His will and the will of His Father.  His mission was to teach us to follow His example.

In so many areas of our society volunteers are desperately required in order to meet the needs of our less-fortunate brothers and sisters.  Hospitals, homeless shelters, food banks, human-rights groups, just to mention a few, who need our assistance. For those who do not feel called to venture in this direction, there is another option.

Right here in our own faith community of St. Monica’s, there is a great need for volunteers to help enrich parish life. Lectors, Eucharistic ministers, ushers, choir members and many other parish groups are eager to welcome new volunteers. Although you may think you do not have gifts or talents to offer, God sees each of us as unique beings with gifts to give.  One person’s gift is not to be considered greater or lesser than another’s.

Take time to examine what you have to offer, ask God to enlighten you with regards to your special attributes, and more importantly, be still and listen for God’s answer. Then act on it.  Consider the complete list of parish ministries below and follow what it suggests. This additional way of giving will bring us much satisfaction and a sense of being interconnected. It’s a way of responding to the request of Pope Francis to reach out to others. See it to be a journey of discovering ourselves leading us to a spirit of resurrection. You will be much appreciated wherever you give of yourself.

Reflections

Matthew 5: 14-16b

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.  Instead they put it on a stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way let your light shine before others.

1 Peter 4: 10

Each one should use whatever gifts he has received to serve others, faithfully administrating God’s grace in its various forms.

1 John 3: 17

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brothers and sisters in need and has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?
