Video Divina: The Son of Man

St. Monica's Parish Hall - 6405 Terrebonne, Montreal, Qc.

Directed by: Mark Dornford-May

South Africa, 2006 - Xhosa with English subtitles

Shot against the backdrop of the violence-riddled Black townships of post-apartheid Cape Town, and with the gospel text enculturated to modern times, Son of Man delivers one indelible impression after another. The conception of her child is announced to a black Mary during a bloody militia attack on a grade school; the angel Gabriel is a precocious child marked with a few white feathers; Jesus insists that the disciples surrender their handguns. In no time at all, the corrupt and violent ruling regime identifies this popular preacher and healer as dangerous, and has him conveniently disappear. A symbolic crucifixion morphs into several representations of a Resurrection that brings peace, hope and social integrity to the people, as the Spirit of this risen Lord moves powerfully among them.
