Jerusalem, 33 AD. Clavius is a senior officer in the Roman army, delegated to be the officer-in-command at a crucifixion and to ensure that no incidents occur at or after the execution. When the body of one of those executed disappears from its tomb, followed by growing rumors that he has risen from the dead, Pontius Pilate delegates Clavius to investigate this troublesome mystery. The man whose body has disappeared is a Galilean named Jeshua, or Jesus. What begins as a professional duty for the pagan Clavius soon becomes a spiritual search that leads him through a profound conversion experience.
